Free Word Counter

Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and lines instantly. Estimate reading and speaking time, import a TXT file, and export your text or statistics.

Free Word Counter Online

Use the Vamriko Word Counter to count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and lines as you type or paste text. The built-in Text Analyzer also displays word length, sentence length, UTF-8 text size, and estimated reading and speaking time.

Check the length of an essay, blog post, report, email, social media caption, or speech draft. You can enter text directly or load a TXT file, then copy or download your results without creating an account.

Count Words and Characters

Review the word count, total characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and lines. The without-spaces count excludes whitespace such as spaces, tabs, and line breaks.

Paragraphs are identified using blank-line separators, while lines are counted from line breaks rather than visual wrapping in the editor. Sentence counts use punctuation and line-break rules, so they are practical text statistics rather than a full grammatical analysis.

Estimate Reading and Speaking Time

Choose a reading speed of 150, 200, 250, or 300 words per minute, or a speaking speed of 100, 130, 160, or 180 words per minute. The tool calculates duration from the word count and selected speed.

Use these estimates to plan articles, presentations, scripts, and speeches. These results are estimates, not guarantees of how long a person will take to read or speak the text. Language, complexity, pauses, and delivery style can affect the actual duration.

Analyze Word Length and Text Structure

Check average word length, average words per sentence, the longest word, and the UTF-8 byte size of your text. These measurements describe the text but do not grade its writing quality or readability.

When eligible words are present, the Top words section lists up to ten words with their counts and percentages. A predefined set of common English and Arabic words is excluded from that list, but not from the total word count.

Import TXT Files and Export Your Results

Type or paste text, choose a TXT file, or drop one into the file area. TXT files are read as UTF-8 and must be no larger than 1 MiB (1,048,576 bytes). The analyzer also stops updating when entered text exceeds that UTF-8 size limit.

Use Copy text or Copy statistics to copy the information you need. Download TXT saves your text, while Download Report saves a separate TXT analysis report containing statistics and the top-word list.

Word Counting for Arabic, English, and Unicode Text

The analyzer accepts Arabic, English, and other Unicode text. It uses browser word segmentation when available and a letter-and-number matching method otherwise, so word counts can vary with browser support and text structure.

Characters are counted as Unicode code points. Some emoji and accented or combined symbols contain multiple code points and may therefore contribute more than one to the character count. Emoji are not necessarily counted as words.

Local Text Analysis

The Word Counter reads TXT files and calculates text statistics locally in your browser. Its analysis code does not upload the text you enter or the file you load to a server.

Local text analysis does not mean the entire page makes no network connections. The page also loads analytics and advertising services; see the site's Privacy page for information about those services.

Word Counter FAQ

How do I count words online?

Type or paste your text into the editor, or load a TXT file. The word count and other statistics update as you edit text within the supported size limit.

What is the difference between words and characters?

Words are the text units identified by the tool's word-segmentation method. Characters are counted as Unicode code points, including punctuation and whitespace in the total character count.

Can I count characters without spaces?

Yes. The Without spaces statistic excludes whitespace, including spaces, tabs, and line breaks.

How are reading and speaking time calculated?

The tool divides the word count by the selected speed in words per minute and converts the result into a duration. Actual reading or speaking time varies with the person, language, and content.

Can I use the Word Counter for Arabic text?

Yes. The analyzer accepts Arabic and other Unicode text. Counts depend on segmentation, punctuation, and browser support. Sentence counting follows simple rules and may not identify every language-specific sentence boundary.

Why can an emoji count as more than one character?

The tool counts Unicode code points rather than visible symbols. A combined emoji can contain several code points, even when it appears as a single symbol.

Can I load and download TXT files?

Yes. Load a TXT file no larger than 1 MiB. Download TXT saves your text, and Download Report saves the analysis results as a separate TXT file.

Is the Word Counter free to use?

Yes. The Word Counter is free to use without requiring an account.

Does the Word Counter upload my text?

The tool's analysis and file-reading code processes your text locally and does not upload it for counting. The page separately loads analytics and advertising services, as described in the site's privacy information.
