How to convert an image

Choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP file from your device, or drop it into the file area.
Select PNG, JPG, or WebP as the output format.
For JPG or WebP, adjust the quality setting. For JPG, choose the color that replaces transparent areas.
Select "Convert and preview". Inspect the image and compare the source and output sizes.
Select "Download converted image" to save the previewed output. Changing an option clears the old output, so convert again before downloading.

Which image format should you choose?

JPG: A common choice for photographs when transparency is not needed. It uses lossy compression, so lower quality settings can reduce detail and introduce visible artifacts.
PNG: Useful for transparent graphics, screenshots, and sharp-edged artwork. PNG uses lossless compression for the raster image being saved. Converting a previously compressed JPG to PNG does not restore detail already lost in the JPG.
WebP: An option for web images that can retain transparency. This tool uses the browser's quality-controlled WebP encoding; it does not offer a separate lossless WebP mode.

The best result depends on the image and the destination requirements. The converter does not guarantee that another format will be smaller. Use the displayed file sizes and visual preview to compare the actual result.

Quality settings and file size

The quality slider applies to JPG and WebP output, from 10% to 100%, with a default of 92%. These values control the browser's encoder and are not a measurement of retained image detail. A 100% setting is not a guarantee of lossless output.

The slider is disabled for PNG because PNG encoding does not use this quality parameter. If your goal is smaller pixel dimensions rather than a different file format, use Image Resizer. Format conversion here keeps the decoded width and height.

Repeatedly saving an image in a lossy format can introduce additional degradation. Start from your best available source and inspect the converted output before using it.

Transparency and JPG background color

PNG and WebP can preserve transparent areas. JPG cannot store transparency, so this converter fills those areas with your selected background color before encoding the image. White is the default.

The checkerboard in the previews helps you identify transparency. It is a display background only and is not included in the downloaded file. Choosing PNG does not automatically remove an existing solid background from a photograph.

Practical conversion examples

A transparent logo needed as JPG: Select JPG and choose the background color used in the destination document or layout. Inspect the logo edges in the output preview.
A photograph for a website: Try WebP or JPG, compare the output size, and adjust quality if the result shows visible artifacts.
A PNG required by another application: Select PNG and download the converted copy. Keep in mind that changing the format does not increase resolution or recover missing detail.

Local processing and limitations

The conversion code reads and encodes the selected image locally in your browser. It does not upload the image for conversion. The website still loads its normal resources and may load analytics and advertising resources.

This tool handles one image at a time and creates a static output. Animated WebP input is not preserved as an animation. SVG, GIF, HEIC, TIFF, PDF, and RAW files are not accepted by this tool.

Output encoding depends on browser support. The tool checks the returned image type and reports an error if the browser does not create the selected format, rather than downloading a file with a misleading extension.

This is a canvas-based raster conversion, not a metadata-preserving archival workflow. Do not rely on it to retain camera metadata, original color-profile information, or animation. Very large images may exceed browser memory or canvas limits; use a smaller source if conversion fails.

Which formats can I convert?

The tool accepts JPG, PNG, and WebP and offers those three output formats. Encoding the selected output depends on your browser's support.

Why is quality disabled for PNG?

The PNG encoder does not use the quality parameter offered for JPG and WebP. Changing the slider would not control PNG quality or compression here.

Why does a transparent image get a background when converted to JPG?

JPG does not support transparency. Choose the JPG background color before converting. PNG and WebP output can preserve transparent areas.

Will the converted file always be smaller?

No. File size depends on the source, output format, image content, and encoding settings. The preview shows the actual output size and its difference from the source file size.

Does conversion improve image quality or resolution?

No. Conversion keeps the decoded pixel dimensions and does not recover details missing from the source. Lossy encoding can reduce quality.

Does the download match the converted preview?

Yes. The tool downloads the same encoded file used for the output preview. If you change settings, the old output is cleared and you must convert again.

Are my images uploaded for conversion?

No. The conversion code processes the selected image locally in your browser.

Can I convert an animation or preserve camera metadata?

The tool creates a static image and is not designed to preserve animation or original camera metadata. Keep the original file if those features matter.
