Add Page Numbers to PDF

Add page numbers to a PDF for free in your browser. Choose pages, numbering format, position, size, color, and margins. Preview the numbered output and download a separate copy.

Add page numbers to PDF online

Number a report, study document, manual, proposal, or scanned PDF without sending the document to a server for processing. Vamriko adds visible text to the selected pages and creates a separate downloadable PDF. Your original file is not overwritten.

Choose all pages or a custom selection, set the first visible number, and place the labels at the top or bottom with left, center, or right alignment. Use the output preview to check the layout before downloading.

How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Choose an unlocked PDF from your device, or drag it into the file area.
  2. Enter all, a range such as 2-10, or a selection such as 1,3-5,8. These values refer to physical PDF page positions, starting from 1.
  3. Set the start number, position, label format, font size, color, and edge margin.
  4. Optionally enable "Skip the first page" to exclude PDF page 1. For labels containing "of", choose what the total represents.
  5. Select "Preview numbering" to inspect a sample rendered from the numbered PDF. Changing an option makes the previous preview out of date.
  6. Select "Add page numbers and download PDF", then open the downloaded copy to check the result.

Number selected pages and skip a cover

Selected pages receive consecutive numbers in document order. For example, selecting 2,4-5 with a start number of 1 places 1 on PDF page 2, 2 on PDF page 4, and 3 on PDF page 5. Unselected pages stay in the document without new numbering.

"Skip the first page" always excludes PDF page 1, not the first page in your custom selection. In a six-page document, selecting all pages and skipping the first page numbers PDF pages 2 through 6 as 1 through 5 when the start number is 1.

Choose the total in Page X of Y

The formats "X of Y" and "Page X of Y" have three total options. "All document pages" uses the PDF's full page count. "Numbered pages only" uses the number of pages receiving a label. "Last number in sequence" uses the final visible number, including your chosen starting number.

For a six-page PDF with a skipped cover and a start number of 1, the final label is "Page 5 of 6" with all document pages, or "Page 5 of 5" with numbered pages only. If five selected pages start at 10, the last-number option gives labels from "Page 10 of 14" to "Page 14 of 14".

Position and preview the page numbers

Choose one of six placements and a font size of 9, 11, or 14. Black, gray, and blue are available. The edge margin accepts whole values from 8 to 144 PDF coordinate units and is measured from the visible page boundary to the text.

The numbering logic accounts for page rotation and the intersection of CropBox and MediaBox. Previewing renders a sample from the generated PDF using the same numbering settings as the download. It does not show every page of a long document.

Numbers are added over existing page content; the tool does not create a new blank footer or detect occupied space. Check that labels do not cover a signature, footnote, chart, or existing footer. If a label does not fit on a small page, reduce the margin, size, or label length.

Local processing and important limitations

The PDF is read and numbered locally in your browser. The page still loads website resources and may load advertising resources, but the numbering code does not upload the selected PDF for processing.

Password-protected PDFs are not supported. Use an unlocked copy you are authorized to edit. Large or complex files may exceed your browser's available memory or take longer to process.

This tool adds visible numbering. It does not remove existing numbers, update a table of contents, change PDF page-label metadata, or provide Roman numeral numbering. The output is not created by converting each document page into a new image. Review the downloaded copy before sharing it.

Add Page Numbers to PDF FAQ

Can I number only selected PDF pages?

Yes. Enter a range such as 2-10 or individual pages and ranges such as 1,3-5,8. The selected pages are numbered in document order, and all document pages remain in the output.

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Enter a non-negative whole start number. The first selected page receives that number, and later selected pages continue the sequence.

How do I leave the cover page unnumbered?

Enable "Skip the first page" to exclude PDF page 1, or enter a page range beginning at page 2. The chosen start number applies to the first remaining selected page.

What does the total in Page X of Y mean?

You choose the total: all document pages, numbered pages only, or the last number in the visible sequence. The default is all document pages.

Can I preview the actual numbering?

Yes. Select "Preview numbering" to render a sample from the generated numbered PDF. If you change the settings, preview again to see the updated result.

Are my PDF files uploaded for numbering?

No. The numbering code reads and processes the selected PDF locally in your browser.

Does the tool replace existing page numbers?

No. It adds new visible labels without removing existing numbers. Choose a position that does not overlap existing content.

Can I number a password-protected PDF?

Password-protected PDFs are not supported. Choose an unlocked copy that you are authorized to edit.

Will my original PDF be changed?

No. The tool creates a separate downloadable file with a name ending in -page-numbers.pdf. Your original file is not overwritten.
